How to Incorporate Minimalism in Your Home

Category Lifestyle

Minimalism is a trend that many people are following. It might seem like a new way of saying that you are simply decluttering but minimalism stretches beyond that.

Many people, however, don't really know where to start or where to stop when it comes to a minimalist approach.

Luckily, you can start incorporating minimalism in your home by following a few easy steps. Say goodbye to your inner hoarder and say hello to things that will only spark joy, as the famous Marie Kondo saying goes.

What if I have too much stuff?

The answer is quite simple: get rid of the stuff you don't use regularly.

A home should be a tranquil place for you to unwind after a long day at work; a place where you can relax and kick your feet up.

A house is not a storeroom. Minimalism highlights the beautiful features of your home and forces you to declutter your home.

It is not about getting rid of everything and having half a couch in your living room. It is a lifestyle choice designed to clear the often chaotic space you inhabit.

Will I have space for the small things?

When changing to the minimalist lifestyle people often overthink every single thing that they own and this causes even more stress. This is exactly what people should avoid when minimizing space.

Small and insignificant items (like kitchen knives) will probably not be a big deal, but it will cause frustration if they are blunt. You can replace them with a sharper set if it is going to make life in the kitchen easier.

The point of minimalism is to have functional things in our homes; things that work and don't cause frustration.

Okay, where do I even start?

You don't want to immediately throw away everything and anything that you see. Start small and start simple.

Think about the items mindfully and intentionally: will I be upset tomorrow if I throw this away today?

You might want to start with a general clean-up. Cleaning out the closets, going through the old boxes in the garage, and sorting through old clothes is a great start.

You might not want to throw away anything at all. You can choose to adopt a new mindset where you think carefully before bringing certain things into your home going forward.

How do I get into the right mindset?

It is very difficult to part with your belongings. It is human nature to value the things we buy because we have worked so hard for them.

But cluttered homes can easily cause cluttered minds. The easiest thing would be to just take a moment. Sit calmly in one place and think about what you want your home to reflect.

Do you want a place that is going to cause added anxiety when you walk into it? Or do you want a place that calms you down as you walk through the front door?

What are some of the benefits of minimalism?

If you dive deep into the abyss of the minimalist lifestyle, you will be confronted with many pre-conceived ideas you might have had about the world.

Don't be surprised that you might start to analyse your own attitudes towards money, possessions, and certain lifestyles.

The sooner you discard the things that don't serve you anymore, the lighter you will feel. The less stuff you have, the less you have to worry about.

Minimalism is not about throwing away your entire house. It is about recalibrating the space where you seek refuge against the chaotic world outside.
